Nikki-1

PLNU alum Nikki Jimenez (09) recently won the New Professional of the Year award at the Public Relations Society of America’s San Diego/Imperial Counties annual Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards ceremony. The event took place on October 15 at The Prado in Balboa Park where the most esteemed professionals in the field gathered to mingle, enjoy a lovely dinner, and recognize award recipients.

Jimenez graduated from PLNU with a broadcast journalism major and public relations minor. Upon graduation, she decided to pursue a career in her minor field of study, public relations. In a recent interview with PLNU campus newspaper, The Point, Jimenez claimed that the PR minor offered by the university put her ahead of the game among her peers in the field. She left PLNU with a formal foundation of PR and was eager to build upon it in a career setting.

Fast-forward a few years, and it is no secret that Jimenez’s love for working in PR and developing relationships in the community has taken her far. According to Jimenez, winning the New Professional of the Year award has validated her and the work she is doing. Jimenez is quickly approaching her five-year mark at Focuscom Inc., a public relations and public affairs firm, and has some advice to give based on her post-college experience.

“One [piece of advice I would give is] learn how to network,” said Jimenez in an interview with The Point. “And I think you do that by joining and attending professional development workshops and mixers. Don’t be afraid.”

So, what’s next for this PLNU alum and recent PR award recipient? While the details are unclear, she has a few ideas in mind. Jimenez would love to travel to New York with clients in hopes of one day being featured on the Today Show.

“That’s a huge career goal for me,” said Jimenez.

PLNU is proud of Jimenez and all that she has accomplished since graduating from the university. We are excited to watch as she continues to pursue her career goals and dreams while positively impacting the community around her along the way.

Since winning the award, Jimenez had the opportunity to fly to New York City where she was featured on Good Morning America’s Shark Tank Your Life! with one of her clients, The Undress, which currently has the most funded women’s apparel project on the crowd funding site, Kickstarter. The clothing allows users to change clothes without actually getting undressed. After the Kickstarter managed to raise $615,663 in just 39 days, Jimenez was asked to appear on Good Morning America’s Fashion Face-Off segment to do a live demonstration.
