PLNU Freshman Anthony Whitson-Martini was recently honored as the 2nd place winner in the Carmel Music Society Vocal Competition, held once every four years in Carmel, Calif.  The competition is open to all singers between the ages of 18 and 32 who are either residents or students in California, Oregon, or Washington.  Only two current undergraduate students were chosen for the final competition and Whitson-Martini was the youngest finalist to compete as well as the only singer currently enrolled in a west coast university. The 1st and 3rd place winners have graduate degrees in music from the Manhattan School of Music and Yale University, respectively.

This was the first time PLNU had a finalist or a winner in this competition.

“To have a freshman place among the post-graduates at some the nation’s finest schools of music is phenomenal,” stated J. Craig Johnson, PLNU associate professor of music and Whitson-Martini’s voice teacher.  “I loved reading Anthony’s notification letter for the finals, because it only mentioned two schools from the west coast: San Francisco Conservatory and PLNU.”
